about

The story of this song is set in Connemara, Galway Bay, on the West of Ireland, where I was camping in a cowshed on the shore with my child sleeping on a bed of scythed rushes and our woman far away... (George Marsh)

lyrics

Dark Islands

The open doorway rustles with a light dust fall
As a sleeping wren turns in the old roof turf.
The silence now stretches past the curlew’s call
And rests on a bed of whispering surf.

The full moon’s glow echoes softly from the bay
And spreads through the gloom in the night frost air
Where my sweet boy sleeps dreaming in the hay
Dark islands, shining water, have we lost her?

She’s a thousand miles away
Will she be there?
Dark islands, dark islands

The moon’s reflection ripples and there comes a sudden chill
The little boy turns in his cow-shed bed
She’s a long way away and she’s itching for a thrill
In a wild mood that’s filled me up with dread

The open doorway rustles with a pattering of rain
I hear his snuffling snores as he breathes but doesn’t stir
Will his life be sadness, and things we can’t explain?
Dark islands, shining water, have we lost her?

She’s a thousand miles away
Will she be there?
Dark islands, dark islands
