about

This song comes from an idea by Sir Thomas Wyatt, one of the supposed lovers of Anne Boleyn, who managed to skate when she and the others were all beheaded. The idea is Wyatt's, the lyrics are new, and the musical style still has something of the Tudor world about it, a hint of Greensleeves.

lyrics

Blame Not

You cut the strings on Mandy
And kicked your Jimmy Choo
Smack at the polished cedar wood
And smashed a hole right through.
Temper, temper, once-my-love!
The mandolin is true -
He only sang what I told him to:
The treachery of you.

His strings it’s true played hostile chords
His tone was bitter gall
But kicking holes through the sounding board
Is no use at all.
He told the world what you promised
And what it is you do.
He sang the truth he sang the truth
Sang the truth of you.

Whose fault is it the song is cruel?
Twas you that I admired
I think we should name the one
By whom the song’s inspired.
The mandolin is not to blame
But the one who was untrue
He only sang what I told him to:
The treachery of you.
